Fish - USA Green River Formation
The Green River Formation was created during the Eocene period - about 60 million years ago. The area, encompassing parts of Wyoming, Colarado and Utah, is famous for its fossil fish found in vast quantities, in near perfect condition. The waters of the Green River must have been calm and deep to allow the dead fish to be covered in sediment quickly. With low water temperatures and little oxygen at depth, scavengers and microbes would also have been unlikely to have the opportunity to attack the carcasses. Fish fossils commom to this area were Knightia, Heliobatis and Diplomystus.
