The Roman Empire was established in 27BC, following the demise of the Roman Republic. With Rome as its centre, the Empire prospered under its emperors, created new trade routes, made great technological advances, was influential and supporting of the arts. At its height, around 100AD (under Emperor Trajan) it ruled over 70 million people and covered 5 million square kilometres. By 335AD, after the assassination of Emperor Severus, the empire plunged into what became known as the Crisis of the Third Century (285 - 294AD). During the period 1-3 AD, many artisans created beautiful pieces of jewellery for men, women and children to adorn themselves.
