Garnet is not a single mineral but rather a group of similar minerals. They have similar physical properties and crystal forms but differ in chemical composition.
The most common colour is dark red. Other colours include green, yellow, brown, pink, orange, black, grey and purple.
Types of garnet include spessartite, grossular, tsavotite, andolite and uvarovite.
Almondine and pyrope are the most common.
